The Circle
By Geoffrey Simon Brown (Playwriting, 2014)
Directed by Ann-Marie Kerr
It’s a garage party. Amanda is a genius. Ily is a drug dealer. Kit is a runaway. Mutt is a mess. Will has ADHD. Daniel is the son of a priest. Something bad is going to happen…
The Circle is a story about youthful immortality, violence, and the creation of a family. NTS graduating playwright Geoffrey Simon Brown wants to leave the audience conflicted about the teens he depicts, and their circumstances. “Some of these kids’ backgrounds are bleak, yes. But they are all just looking for a place to fit in and to exist. So when events turn, who can really say who among them is good or evil or at fault?"
Geoffrey co-founded the Major Matt Mason Collective back home in Calgary, a theatre company dedicated to creating intimate, visceral, and experimental theatre about and for youth. “I don’t find that there’s enough theatre, like The Circle, that engages my own generation; it’s a shame. After graduation, I’ll continue developing work for my company,” says Geoffrey, whose show Control will be produced by the Collective this summer. As well, he plans to travel the country as a playwright, actor, director, and as a singer with bands Black Opus and Lichard Worm.
Geoffrey Simon Brown is a Calgary born theatre artist and co-creator of the Major Matt Mason Collective, a theatre company dedicated to creating intimate, visceral, experimental theatre about and for Calgary’s younger generation. Since 2010 he has worked with the collective to produce emerging and established scripts as well as collaboratively devised work.
As a writer he has tackled an array of genres and styles from provocative subject matter to theatre for young audiences, original work to adaptation, ensemble based creation to solo performance. His plays Destroy and Air have previously been produced by Major Matt Mason and a third show, Control, will be produced by the collective this summer.
He is a graduate of Mount Royal University’s Theatre Arts Performance program and has worked as an actor in Calgary, Edmonton, and Montreal including credits for Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects, Northern Light, and Shakespeare in the Park.
He is the 2010 recipient of Theatre Calgary’s Stephen Hair emerging actor award and the 2013 winner of the Playwrights Guild of Canada Post-Secondary Award.
In his free time he writes and sings for the bands Black Opus and Lichard Worm.
After graduation he will be attempting to travel the country as a playwright, actor, director, and musician.
