The 2014 English Graduating Class of the National Theatre School of Canada is proud to present Lion in the Streets, by Montreal-born Judith Thompson, one of Canada's most respected playwrights and an NTS Acting alumna. The play, directed by Ravi Jain, follows a ghostly girl on a journey to uncover the mystery of her own disappearance. Lion in the Streets runs at Studio Hydro-Québec (Monument-National) from October 22 to 26.
“I chose Lion in the Streets as the opening play of the 2013-2014 season for its fragmented structure, style, and poetics,” explains Alisa Palmer, who launches her first season as Artistic Director of NTS’s English section. “As an ensemble piece with a wide emotional range, from the searing to the redemptive, Lion in the Streets is perfect material with which to challenge young actors and designers, both as artists and as human beings. I'm excited to have director Ravi Jain at the helm. His work is razor sharp, intensely passionate and deeply humanistic. As a rising leader in the Canadian theatre scene, Ravi will bring a new perspective to this iconic Canadian play."
About The Play
Isobel, a mysterious nine-year old, is lost, frightened, and desperate to find her way home. She is drawn into the lives of the people in her community and somewhere between reality and dreams, memories and fantasies, Isobel encounters people who are trapped, threatened, and like herself, fighting for their own survival. As the violence around her grows, Isobel catches the scent of her killer. Will she choose revenge or forgiveness?
“The more I work on this play, the more I fall in love with it. Judith Thompson is an amazing observer of human dynamics and if you look at the intricacies of each of the relationships that she creates, they are all fascinating, complex, moving and powerful. It is quite a layered story in which good and evil lurk, around us and in all of us: you just have to let go to the experience,“ says director Ravi Jain, who will also be presenting his play A Brimful of Asha in Montreal, at Usine C, later in October.
About Ravi Jain, Director
Ravi Jain is an actor/creator and award-winning director whose work has been produced extensively around the world. Over the past six years, as artistic director and founder of his international theatre company Why Not Theatre, Ravi has created over 14 productions, performing in 15 different cities on 4 continents. Ravi’s devised creations include his own adaptation of Hamlet _entitled _The Prince, the Dora Award winning Spent (created with Theatre Smith Gilmour and Adam Paolozza), the smash hit A Brimful of Asha - starring his real life mother Asha Jain. Ravi’s directorial credits include Nicolas Billon’s Governor General’s Award nominated triptych Fault Lines, which include the plays Greenland, Iceland and Faroe Islands. Ravi's varied body of work has established him as a multifaceted artist continually pushing the boundaries.
Ravi was the Urjo Kareda Artist in Residence at Tarragon Theatre (2010), is a Resident Artist at Soulpepper Theatre Company and is the inaugural Artistic Director in Residence at the Theatre Centre. Ravi is also on the roster of clowns for Cirque du Soleil, and was awarded the Ken MacDougal and Ontario Arts Council’s Pauline McGibbon Award for Emerging Director.
The 2013-2014 season of public performances of the NTS graduating class is an excellent opportunity to catch future artists of the Canadian stage in action just before the beginning of their professional careers. Graduating actors, playwrights, directors, designers and production personnel work year round with professional guest directors to present a varied season that will hone the skills and talents of these new artists.
