Salem Currie is a playwright and actor raised in Oshawa, Ontario (the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation). Currie’s work starts at the intersection of fatness, queerness, and victimhood, and centres masking trauma with irreverent humour, combining wit and vulgarity to chip away at the coping mechanisms we use to survive.

Currie’s plays include I Got My Life Back (New Words Festival 2021, directed by Arianna Bardesono), The Borrowing Man (Geordie Theatre Fest reading, directed by Mike Payette), Justin Eddy and the Great Cosmic Crisis (co-production by Centaur Theatre and Doorstep Theatre Project, directed by Murdoch Schon), The Night Shift (dramaturged by Erin Sheilds), and It’s Not a Boy! (commissioned by Blue Canoe Productions, directed by Alisha Grech).

Currie is graduating The National Theatre School in June of 2021 and has felt honoured to work with collaborators like Nick Carpenter, Dean Fleming, Sarah Elkashef, and Andrea Romaldi. She is looking forward to continuing her pursuit of theatre in Montreal.
