Maryanna Chan

Scénographie - Set and Costume Design (2021)

Maryanna Chan is a Chinese-Canadian artist, illustrator, and scenographer born and raised in Saskatoon. She studied Visual Communications Design at the Alberta College of Art + Design, majoring in Illustration (BDes, 2018).

Maryanna is dedicated to creating spaces for people in marginalized communities to tell their stories, and feel truthfully represented — this is the root of her theatre practice. Through her work, she speaks about cultural identities, representation, and equality. She strives to create a body of work that encourages people to be more understanding, truthful, and open minded. She is very passionate about working in circus, dance, film, theatre, and with as many puppets as she can get her hands on.

While attending the National Theatre School, she trained with designers Angela Rassenti, Cathia Pagatto, Gabriel Tsampalieros, Josée Bergeron-Proulx, Micheline Chevrier, and Stéphane Longpré. Her work includes designing costumes for Indecent, directed by Mike Payette, acting as Assistant Set Designer to Joanna Yu for Everybody, directed by Anita Rochon, and designing a set for the New Words Festival, directed by Andrew Kushnir.
