Prey
By Britney Tangedal (Playwriting, 2014)
Directed by Ann Hodges (Directing, 1992)
Terrence and Sam face off in a championship chess game. Terrence wins the game. Sam wins Leigh. Enter Queen and Horse. The next move is Leigh’s…
Prey is a magic-realist exploration of ambition, possession, and obsession. “My writing usually veers towards the absurd and is quite stylised. In an NTS workshop we studied magic realism; specifically, the play Angels in America. The genre marries what I’m instinctively drawn to – the magic and the mythic – and realism, which my training at NTS has led me to appreciate,” explains Britney Tangedal, who created the characters of Horse and Queen as magical manifestations of what Terrence and Sam each want/fear in Leigh. “For Terrence, the horse is this wild, unattainable creature, while the Queen is a distraction for Sam, who is entirely focussed on his rematch with Terrence.”
Like her classmate Geoffrey, 2014 graduating playwright Britney Tangedal also has her own theatre company. She is the founder and co-artistic director of What She Said, dedicated to producing original absurdist or experimental works, with a special interest in the female voice.
Britney Tangedal is a Toronto-born writer, raised in Mississauga, Ontario. She began writing while studying Drama in the Regional Arts Program at Cawthra Park Secondary School (a place which remains dear to her heart). Prior to enrolling at NTS, Britney completed an undergraduate degree at McGill University. Britney is the founder and co-artistic director of What She Said, a theatre company dedicated to producing original absurdist or experimental works, with a special interest in the female voice. She is the 2013 second place winner in the Playwrights Guild of Canada’s Post-Secondary Playwriting Competition. Recent writing credits include “Thanks” (Solo Party Collective 2013), “The Love Game” (WSS 2012), and “Fishing: Part One” (Protestival 2012).
