The 2013 English graduating class of the National Theatre School of Canada (NTS) is proud to present Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov, directed by Vikki Anderson (translation Paul Schmidt). The play will run at the Ludger-Duvernay Theatre of the Monument-National from December 11 to 15. Toronto-based set, costume, lighting and projection designer Patrick Du Wors has been hired by NTS to create the set for Three Sisters.
The works of Russia's greatest playwright, Anton Chekhov, masterfully blend comedy and pathos, creating a richness of texture and characterization rarely seen since Shakespeare. With Three Sisters (1901), his portrait of the Prozorov family's elusive dream of returning from the provinces to an idealized Moscow, he captured a restlessness and yearning which remain enduringly modern. In Paul Schmidt's version - the basis for the Wooster Group's acclaimed adaption Brace Up! - we can perceive, for the first time in English, a refreshingly clear and colloquial style we instinctively know as Chekhov's own.
A theatre director, designer and producer, Vikki Anderson is the founder of DVxT Theatre Company. Vikki's work for DVxT includes the multi award-winning production of Ibsen's The Doll House adapted by John Murrell, the acclaimed Soulpepper production of Happy Days starring Martha Burns and most recently, a site-specific production of The Turn of the Screw at the Campbell House Museum. DVxT has received 19 Dora Nominations and 12 Dora Awards for their work thus far. Recent directing credits include: The Misanthrope (Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Associate), The Mill Part 4 : Ash (Theatrefront/Young Centre), Romeo & Juliet (Canadian Stage); The Last Five Years (The Grand Theatre); Creon (Theatreworks). Vikki has collaborated with many other theatre artists and companies, including: Buddies in Bad Times, Crow's Theatre, Factory Theatre, Great Canadian Theatre Company, The National Arts Centre, Nightwood Theatre, Smith-Gilmour, Soulpepper, Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Tarragon Theatre, Theatre Calgary and Theatre Direct.
