Montreal, April 17, 2013 – Presented from April 29 to May 4 at the Studio Hydro-Québec of the Monument-National, the National Theatre School of Canada's New Words Festival 2013 features new plays by the two 2013 graduating playwrights that deal in different ways with the consequences of being trapped in one's own life. Model Wanted by Step Taylor is directed by Ruth Madoc-Jones (Acting, 1993) and You Can Do Whatever You Want by Jesse Stong is directed by Emma Tibaldo (Directing, 2003). On stage and backstage, the 2013 Acting, Production, and Set and Costume Design graduating classes in the final public performance of their NTS training.
Three generations of Thomas women in three very different eras reveal difficult and powerful moments from their own "her-stories". You Can Do Whatever You Want is a play about the balance between personal ambition and family obligation.
"I love to write strong female characters. So I tapped into my own family and summers spent at the cottage with my crazy grandma," laughs Jesse Stong, who was lucky to have been mentored for this play by novelist, playwright, and strong woman in her own right, Claudia Dey (Playwriting, 1997).
There are some significant challenges in You Can Do Whatever You Want for Jesse's fellow NTS graduating actors. "The play jumps between the 1960s, 1980s and 2000s. It's a marathon for them, as some play the same character through time. The other thing is that the whole play takes place in a red Thunderbird convertible, but we don't have an actual car on stage. Let's say there will be a bit of magic realism at play!"
